Liverpool Carling Cup victory over Cardiff and Arsenal dramatic comeback against Tottenham should set both clubs up nicely for Saturday’s lunchtime clash. And the same could be said for two lads involved, both of whom happen to ply their trade in the wide areas.
Stewart Downing was Liverpool’s best player at Wembley with the way he worked his flank, firstly on the left and then the right to provide a constant threat with his runs and crosses.
That must have felt satisfying – producing on the big stage – for a player whose form has fluctuated in his first season at Anfield.
Theo Walcott has been at Arsenal much longer and his two well-taken goals to seal last week’s win were the perfect response to the stick he was getting from his own fans in the first half.
Yet that criticism stems from the fact that Walcott is erratic, that you never quite know what he is going to produce from one week to the next.
